Baleen Baskets Baleen baskets are made from the baleen plates found in the mouth of plankton eating whales. These plates have hair like structures that filters out the plankton and small fish. The baleen is stripped, soaked in water and then weaved. The tops and bottoms of the baskets are often ornamented with pieces made from Walrus Ivory.Only the Alaskan Natives are allowed to use baleen in their art and Baleen can only be sold in an art form. There are just a handful of people who weave these baskets and they are mostly men.The baskets are very collectable and very difficult to weave.
