Fossilized Whalebone Disc This piece is hand carved by Frederick Kingeekuk, a Siberian Yupik Eskimo of Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island. Carving includes walrus ivory used for the tusks. Unlike earlier generations, Fredrick had the advantage of being educated in his home village of Savoonga and thus was not sent to Mt.Edgecumbe in Southeast Alaska.Fredrick and his siblings French and Floyd Jr. are all excellent carvers and/or scrimshaw artists.Their father, Floyd Sr., is considered by many collectors to be the best carver in the state. As for Fredrick, he is noted for his ivory and bone walrus carvings, ivory seals, and whales. In the last few years, he has started doing relief scenes on small whale and shoulder blades. Most noteworthy are his pods of walrus which include up to twenty walrus in relief with their ivory tusks jutting out.
