Shark Mask This hand-carved shark mask is by Haida artist Donny Varnell. It includes yellow line and netting as accents. Donny was born in Ketchikan, Alaska.He comes from a family of talented, well-known artists.His Great-Grandmother, Selina Peratrovich, Grandmother, Delores Churchill, Aunt, Holly Churchill, and Mother, April Varnell were and are well-known weavers of cedar bark. Donny apprenticed under the most talented carvers of the Northwest Coast, Nathan Jackson, Robert Davidson, and Reg Davidson.Donny believes his presence here is to bring the art of carving to the next level of his heritage.This is obvious in his current work.Donny’s work can be seen throughout Ketchikan and Alaska in public school and other public places.
