This activity scene is carved from a whale vertabrate by Ricky Kuzuguk, an Inupiaq native of Shishmaref, Alaska. It has a fan dancer on one side, and a fisherman on the other.
Ricky began carving at a young age, following the techniques used by his family.  He is an accomplished artist, who works with fossil whalebone, fossil ivory, new ivory and baleen.  All of these materials are obtained from his life of traditional subsistence living.  His carving skills were acquired from teachings by his elders.
